Today’s Shuttle Workforce – A Key Asset for Florida and Our Nation

As the Shuttle Program comes to an end, thousands of seasoned engineers and technicians will find themselves attempting to fill a gap in employment until the next-generation space systems come to fruition.

Space Florida has partnered with Brevard Workforce, Aerospace Career Development Council (ACDC), Workforce Florida, Enterprise Florida and many other entities, to determine next logical steps to assist this workforce.

On the Space Coast, Brevard Workforce has created the Aerospace Workforce Transition Program to help aerospace workers transition smoothly from Space Shuttle jobs to new employment both inside and outside of aerospace. The program provides a diverse range of services, workshops and training for workers to begin now to make a plan for their post-shuttle career. Program details can be found at LaunchNewCareers.com. The Aerospace Workforce Transition Program also has an office on site at KSC Headquarters Building and a Mobile Express fully-equipped RV that moves around KSC property to be accessible to workers. A location schedule can be obtained here.

Additionally Brevard Workforce formed a regional partnership with the Florida High Tech Corridor Council, Workforce Central Florida and the Center for Business Excellence to create an integrated regional strategy to address large workforce changes across the region due to the Space Shuttle program retirement. The Regional Aerospace Workforce Initiative (RAWI) is a collective of business and government leaders from Brevard, Flagler, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia Counties who together have a strategic action plan to address the aerospace workforce needs.

The Aerospace Career Development Council (ACDC) Final Report

In September 2008, Space Florida received a Final Report on the status of the workforce deliverables, relative to the Space Shuttle retirement and transition.  Brevard Workforce conducted three focus groups to test the revised key messages especially geared for the aerospace workforce.  Two of these groups were for USA supervisors and employees, and the remaining session was conducted with community stakeholders. The final Phase III report was issued in February 2010. Click here to view.
