First Florida-Based Google Lunar X Prize Team Announced
Space Florida $2 Million Bonus Prize Enhances State's Attraction for Potential Teams
October 7, 2008
Today, the first Florida-based Google Lunar X Prize (GLXP) team, Omega Envoy, announced its official registration into the global lunar competition. Space Florida, the aerospace economic development arm of the State of Florida, supports this announcement and has assisted with some of the team’s promotional and local recruiting efforts to date. In addition, Space Florida added a $2 Million incentive for the GLXP winner, should they launch from Florida. This is in addition to the $30 Million overall prize from the X Prize Foundation. Space Florida is an official Preferred Launch Site for the Google Lunar X Prize Competition.
"Initiatives like the Google Lunar X Prize Competition serve an important role in driving new and emerging space exploration," stated Steve Kohler, Space Florida President. "We are thrilled to provide consultative support to Omega Envoy and any other GLXP teams who have interest in either moving their operations to and/or launching from Florida. Currently, we are in discussions with other teams that have Florida interest, and as a preferred launch site for the competition, we are looking forward to playing a key role moving forward."
The Google Lunar X Prize currently has 14 registered teams internationally.
