Past Projects

The following sample of past projects represent over $370 million of commitments that Florida has invested to retain and create aerospace jobs and business.

O&C-Orion Capsule - Space Florida committed $35 million to Lockheed-Martin for the refurbishment of the O&C (Operations and Checkout) Building modernizing it for the new Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV). This investment by the State of Florida, will lead to the employment of approximately 300 people who will perform non-traditional work to assemble and checkout the Orion Capsule.

Space Florida Teams With Bigelow Aerospace - Space Florida recently announced a teaming agreement with Bigelow Aerospace, LLC, an entrepreneurial space development company headquartered in Nevada, to explore and support the development of a new, orbital space transportation system located at the Kennedy Space Center.

Space Launch Complex 41 (SLC-41) - Completed in 2002, Space Florida (FSA) financed the refurbishing of Launch Complex 41, formerly a Titan III launch pad, for utilization by United Launch Alliance's Atlas V Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) program. This project marks a $235 million commitment by Florida.

Horizontal Integration Facility (HIF) - Built for Boeing's Delta IV Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) program, this 88,960 square foot facility was financed by Space Florida (FSA) for $24 million and, under Space Florida's (FSA's) management, was completed under budget and ahead of schedule.

Shuttle Launch Experience - Space Florida (FSA) provided $40 million of conduit debt to assist in the financing of the construction of a Shuttle Launch Experience located at the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex. The debt will be repaid from a percentage of ticket sales revenues.

Apollo/Saturn V Center - Space Florida (FSA) financed the facility and leases it to NASA/ KSC and its tourist vendor, Delaware North Parks & Resorts at KSC, Inc., operates it. With a total project cost of $41million, Space Florida (FSA) financed $25 million for construction and secured a $5 million line of credit in which Delaware North Park Service acquired a fleet of new buses.

Space Life Sciences Lab - Space Florida (FSA) partnered with NASA and the State of Florida to appropriate $26 million for the construction of the Laboratory and another $4 million for development of Space Commerce Way road.

Solid Rocket Motor Operational Storage Facility (aka Solid Rocket Motor Upgrade Long Term Storage Facility) - The facility was originally constructed in 1995 for storage of the U.S. Air Force's Titan IVB solid rocket motor upgrade (SRMU) booster segments and is located on Florida National Guard property west of St. Augustine.

Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) Support Complex - Developed in partnership with NASA Kennedy Space Center, Space Florida (FSA) built this 50,000 square foot multi-purpose hangar using State appropriated funds of $5.5 million for site development & construction.

Space Launch Complex 20 - Space Florida (FSA) under contract to the U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Center (SMC, Albuquerque, NM) built the Horizontal Processing Facility for commercial quick reaction launch capabilities for Castor 120 sized booster rockets and smaller. Building cost $3.5 M (SMC funding) - Space Florida (FSA) oversaw construction of the facility. No state funds utilized. SLC 20 is now operated by Florida Air National Guard and NASA. (Final closure completed during fiscal year 2002-03.)

Space Launch Complex 46 - Space Florida (FSA) modified the facilities at SLC 46 to serve commercial, NASA and military programs while continuing to provide a land-based launch capability for the Navy's Trident missiles and the Air Force's Launch Test Program. A financial investment of $8.5 million was used for the construction of new launch facilities.

Cape Canaveral AFS South Gate Campus - Located outside the security gates of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, SF facilities are ideally suited to the commercial customer.

  • Resource Center - 4000 sq ft fully equipped multipurpose meeting facility developed to support a variety of customers. Completed 2001.
  • Space Operations Control Center (SOCC) - developed to serve the commercial customer as a full launch control or satellite operations center. The SOCC is equipped to receive and transmit launch data, communications data and video anywhere on the Cape. Each of the ten user consoles within the facility is equipped with telemetry feeds, communications channels and six video channels, as well as two separate computer networks and land-line telephone service. The center can be configured to accommodate the needs of any customer in less than one week. Each facet of the SOCC infrastructure can be modified to suit the unique requirements of each individual customer.
